In a country scarred by years of violent civil war, the population now has to deal with its dramatic economic and social consequences.
The direct use of children, and especially girls, as soldiers and sex slaves for the troops, and the social difficulties linked with poverty have hugely encouraged the phenomenon of prostitution. The anarchy and impunity, and the acts of violence committed during the fighting, and the lack of clear political direction have led to deep social disintegration in the country, with drastic consequences, particularly for the younger members of the population.
