This Central American country suffers desperate poverty. It lacks the resources to ensure that its population can all be fed and meet their basic needs for health and education. 48% of the population live below the poverty line. The situation seems particularly bad in rural areas, where they lack even the very basics (roads, drinking water, schools, transport, hospitals, etc.) and over 400,000 children below the age of 6 suffer from chronic malnutrition.
The poverty and widespread lack of education sow the seeds for youth violence and offer fertile ground for criminal activities such as child trafficking for sexual exploitation, trading in human organs or illegal adoptions.
