Summary of the Project:
Starting in 2003, Soleterre intervened to renovate the Beni Khloug health centre, which was then handed over to the Moroccan Ministry of Health. The centre has now been restored to its role as the birthplace of over 500 children each year. The association has also ensured free transport of the sick to the hospital in Settat (and for serious cases, to Casablanca) thanks to an ambulance donated by the Italian White Cross. At the end of 2007 the service was taken over by the Settat Delegation of the Ministry of Health. Thanks to Soleterre's intervention, the centre now has a properly equipped labour and delivery room and general clinic. Training and refresher courses for medical and nursing staff were also provided. In 2007 the project continued in partnership with a local doctors' association, the “Association pour la santé et le développement”, in an intervention involving the creation of a computer program for patient data management, computer training for 30 doctors and nurses, the provision of computers for the 30 rural health centres involved in the project, and a central server for the Settat Delegation of the Ministry of Health, the preparation of a paediatric medical coverage plan and the activation of a health education campaign for women and mothers.
In the near future the programme will enjoy the collaboration of the Galliera hospital in Genoa, with whom Soleterre has signed an important partnership agreement which, in addition to continuing and strengthening the actions already underway, will include the creation of a computer network to gather, archive and exchange (for diagnostic purposes) medical records and health documents in preparation for telemedicine and teleconsultation programmes, support for the establishment of indicators suitable to verify the appropriateness of accepting a patient for treatment and the monitoring of progress of diagnostic and therapeutic plans designed specifically for the local situation and context.
